C G Forsyth DSO

Cusack Grant Forsyth was born in 1887, the son of Lt-Col Frederick Arthur Forsyth and Ellen Sanford Forsyth of Ashley House, Lillington Avenue, Leamington Spa. He was adjutant of the 2nd Battalion in 1913, and the photo shows him as a lieutenant in that appointment.  On 21 June 1915 Captain Forsyth was promoted to temporary major.  He was one of six brothers, five of which died in the war, and as a commander was immensely popular and efficient. He was 29 years old, responsible for rebuilding the shattered 6th Battalion after Sulva, and destined for higher command. He was killed during the battle of the Somme on 14 Sep 1916 and buried at Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuille Wood. His name is inscribed on the war memorial in Leamington Spa.
