Lt Frank Cooper Ledgard


Frank Cooper Ledgard was Machine Gun Officer of the 2nd Bn Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 23 Oct 1914, only two months after his elder brother Robert. They were the sons of Armitage and Helen Ledgard of Scarcroft, Thorner, Leeds. Frank was born on 15 Oct 1891. He was educated at Eagle House School in Berkshire, Harrow and then Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the 2nd Bn Yorkshire Regiment in 1911 and promoted to lieutenant in 1913. The battalion landed at Zeebrugge on 6 Oct 1914 and were at Ypres on 14 Oct. On 23 Oct they were involved in heavy fighting in the woods between Zonnebeke and Becelaere. That was where Frank Ledgard was killed whilst working hard to keep changing the position of his two machine-guns. He is buried in Harlebeke New British Cemetery 3 miles to the northeast of Courtai.
