Mounted Infantryman

The companies from the various infantry battalions vastly increased the number of mounted British soldiers, putting a great strain on those responsible for supplying horses. Some animals were sub-standard and others were hardy ponies that performed well but did not look very inspiring. This soldier is armed with Lee Metford rifle and bayonet. He has a haversack on his right shoulder and a bag of feed for his horse. Later on in the war the men were issue with colonial style slouch hats. See Mounted Infantryman, Boer War 1902.
