Prisoners at Nooitgedacht

The Boers were victorious at Nooitgedacht on 13 Dec 1900 and took over the camp after the British fled towards Pretoria. This scene shows British soldiers as prisoners, with armed Boers guarding them. The fence presumably is designed to keep the prisoners confined in the foreground although it looks as if it is the buildings and wagon that are inside the enclosure. Perhaps the enclosure was originally erected by the British for Boer prisoners. The Boer farmers were very familiar with fence building but it seems odd that they should have a prisoner-of-war camp tying down many fighters who would be better employed in attacking British columns.
