Presentation of the Colours

Alexandra presents the Regimental Colour to an ensign at Sheffield on 17 Aug 1875. This illustration appeared in The Graphic soon after the event. The CO Lt-Col Deane stands beside the kneeling young officer. Behind the Princess is Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. Soon after this ceremony he was to set off to India with some of his male companions for a tiger hunting trip lasting eight months. Alexandra, to her dismay, was left at home. The Colours presented to the 1st Battalion on that day replaced ones that had been carried into battle in the Crimea. They had been with the regiment since 1837 when they were presented in Cork.
