Despite all the political difficulties, work on modernising the port facilities continued throughout the 1950s as development was used as a means to try and encourage the local economy and the ability of any successor state to thrive after decolonisation. This particular picture shows the lighter cut wall being laid down. The entire development included dredging, land reclamation and the construction of quay walls such as this one and other ancillary works in a 2.5 million pound investment programme. |
