This photograph shows the Sergeants of the British West India Regiment in Palestine during World War One. It is interesting as it shows a regiment in transition as the white faces are joined by a significant number of black ones. Black soldiers were prevented from becoming officers so NCO ranks were the highest that black Caribbean soldiers could attain.
