The City of Brunei, c.1844


This picture was taken from Frank Marryat's 1848 book: Borneo and the Indian Archipelago. A few Europeans commented how they were underwhelmed by what they came across in Brunei. Given that it was the seat of the Sultans, many had assumed it to be richer and more powerful than it really was.
