Sultan and Japanese Occupiers

This photograph shows the 27th Sultan of Brunei, His Majesty Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin, and local Brunei government officials with the occupying Japanese military personnel during World War 2. The Japanese elected to keep the Sultan in place although they conferred very little on the day to day running of Brunei with him. Seated to the right of the Sultan is Lieutenant General Marquis Toshinari Maeda.
