The Hejaz Railway


This pre-war picture of El Kasr station helps illustrate how vulnerable and isolated the Hejaz Railway could be. It was built largely with support from Germany ostensibly to help pilgrims make it to the holy city of Mecca but it also had a strategic importance for the Ottoman Empire to maintain this hold over the Hejaz.
