The Apotheosis of Cook


It is telling that Philip Loutherbourg's 1794 engraving of Cook ascending to heaven after his death in Hawaii shows him holding a sextant rather than a sword or some other militaria. Cook represented a new kind of Enlightenment hero who was more at ease with science and knowledge than with martial prowess.
