Sir John Chancellor

As the first governor of the new self-governing colony of South Rhodesia, John Chancellor can be seen in the top picture administering the oath of loyalty to the newly elected Prime Minister Sir Charles Coghlan in October, 1923.

Chancellor's term in Southern Rhodesia, 1923'8, more than justified his reputation as a capable and progressive administrator. The constitution which he helped to establish proved more durable than many such instruments and he opposed firmly any suggestion for the introduction of extreme forms of segregation.
