Head-Hunting in Sarawak

This photograph shows the heads of the Punan being displayed by Sea Dyaks to demonstrate their tribal prowess over their enemies. James Brooke frequently commented on how he wished to stamp out the custom but how often he was petitioned to go on head hunting expeditions. He likened their constant pleas to "children crying after sugar plums" if they did not get their way.
