Thomas Cook Tours of Egypt

The exotic nature of Africa meant that is appealed to more intrepid and discerning tourists. Thomas Cook was one of the first to take advantage of the shipping lanes and advances in medicine to encourage Europeans to holiday amongst the ancient civilisation of Egypt or to encourage big game hunters to go on Safari in East or Southern Africa. Needless to say, West Africa saw less tourist activity largely due to its unhealthy climate and continued prevalence of disease.
