Tupaia Map

This map was shown to Cook in 1769 as he explored the Society Islands. He was amazed at its accuracy. One of the scientist's accompanying Cook commented that it was 'a monument of the ingenuity and geographical knowledge of the people in the Society Islands'. The map underlined the maritime skills and knowledge at the disposal of the Polynesians. Unfortunately, the original no longer exists, this is an image of the copy made by Cook of that map.
