World Map, 1548

This map by Dutch cartographer Gemma Frisius shows how much new knowledge was available on the size and location of the Pacific thanks to the journeys of explorers like Magellan. Magellan actually paid with the lives of many of his crew as his own charts and calculations greatly underestimated the size of the Pacific Ocean. This map helps give it an appropriate extent even if the location of islands and landmasses is less than perfect. There is no understanding of the location of Australia, New Zealand and countless other smaller islands.
