World Map, 1714

In the early 18th Century, the French moved into the ascendency in the exploration of the Pacific and Southern Oceans. This 1714 map by Guillaume de L'Isle shows far better understanding of the location of various Pacific Islands, many of which were claimed by the French. However, there is still little improvement in the understanding of the coastlines and extent of New Zealand and Australia.
