This is a cartoon from a Northern American newspaper accusing the British of feeding money and finance to the Southern States during the Civil War. Britain's stance was far more nuanced than suggested, but it was clear that the sympathies of some of Britain's aristocracy and the Free Trade principles which allowed British shipyards to build ships designed for use by the South certainly convinced Northerners otherwise. |
