Imperial Events

As you can see from the dates of these papers, it is possible to get newspapers from many of the most important dates of imperial history. The 1841 copy includes articles about the newly acquired Hong Kong colony and about the unfolding difficulties in Afghanistan during the First Afghan War. The 1857 version naturally mentions the Indian Mutiny in considerable depth. The 1900 newspaper has articles about the Boer War. Newspapers provided the very first information about imperial and world events to an increasingly literate and sophisticated public back in Britain. You can really get a feel for the crises as they unfolded from reading these newspapers.
