The Berlin Congress 1884
Achieved 3 main issues
- 1) Established that Central Africa would be a Free Trade zone
- 2) The River Niger would be open to free navigation
- To stop arguments between Britain and France over access and movement along the course of the river
- 3) No power would be allowed to lay claim to future colonies without first establishing ‘effective occupation’ and some form of administration.
