A series of treaties were signed with local rulers (not always honestly) to gain a legitimacy for claiming the land
The promised for ‘gold seam’ did not appear.
However, the land was surprisingly good farmland.
The BSAC therefore encouraged farmers to settle. Black Africans were forced off the best land and Europeans were given excellent land for a very reasonable price.
The BSACs finances were strained by revolts and rebellions.
