Disraeli found a cheap way of gaining popularity by conferring ‘Empress of India’ on Queen Victoria in 1876.
The Old Mughal Emperor had been dispossessed following the Mutiny - Victoria took his place!
A huge, Mughal style Durbar was held in Delhi in 1877 to proclaim this new title.
