• The British, French and American military zones combined in to a single country - West Germany.

• Elections were held
• Adenauer was the first chancellor
• It was hoped that Germany could rebuild and then help contribute to the defence of Europe
• It joined NATO in 1955

• The Soviets retaliated by creating East Germany under a Communist government.
