It was thought that coal and steel were the two resources needed to wage war and so if the coal and steel industries of France, Germany and other countries were joined together they would not be able to go to war with one another.
- The BeNeLux nations had frequently been caught between these two warring nations and so they wanted this to work to
- Italy also joined as she had also been involved in both World Wars.
