The Kaffir (or Frontier) Wars

The Kaffir Wars was the not very complimentary name given to the conflicts between European settlers in South Africa and the various African tribes trying to resist their encroachment on their lands. This picture was painted by Thomas Baines who was the official artist of the 8th Kaffir War and is entitled: Captain Lord Russel's Coy with a Six-Pounder Detachment of the Royal Artillery Skirmish against the Kaffirs. It shows the kind of imbalance in technology that helped the British and settlers overcome the much more numerous African peoples.
