Cape St. Vincent, 1797


The British had to rely on the Royal Navy to help defend Britain from the successes of Napoleon's campaigns. However with Spain's equivocal support to France the combined navies posed a new threat. Nelson and Jervis' victory over the Spanish fleet was part of a strategy to reduce this threat to the Royal Navy and the defence of Britain.
