Commonwealth Prime-Ministers Banquet


The Commonwealth was the replacement institution designed to replace the coercive Empire with a more collaborative unit. It has struggled to offer a coherent voice in the world but it has been used to bring up controversial and development issues. It was particularly important in criticising Margaret Thatcher's stance on South African sanctions. Recently, countries with no connection to Britain or its empire have applied and been accepted into the Commonwealth.
