Death of Francisco de Almeida

Francisco de Almeida was the Portuguese viceroy to India. Whilst returning to Portugal his ship put in to Table Bay where a group of Khoi set upon them and killed him. It is the first recorded killing of a European in sub-Saharan Africa. It also may help explain why the Portuguese were reluctant to set up a refuelling depot at the Cape. The Dutch would be the first Europeans to realise its potential.
