Diego de Almagro Explores Chile

After finding such success in Peru, the Spanish hoped for more riches to the South of the Continent. This picture shows Diego de Almagro leaving the Spanish settlement in Peru to explore what became known as Chile. However, the Spanish were not to find the same easy riches that they had in Peru. Additionally, their reputation for ruthlessness had preceded them and the Indians to the south were far more determined to resist Spanish incursions into their lands.
