Dunkirk in 1662

This picture is thought to date from 1662 which is the year that Charles II sold Dunkirk to the French for 2.5 million livres. It had been captured from the Spanish in 1658 by the Parliamentarian regime. Partially to mend bridges but also with the realisation that it would be hopeless to defend and with the king badly in need of finance an agreement to transfer it to the French was made.
