Seizing Ionian Islands


Once Britain had seized Malta and had won their victory at Trafalgar, they had the luxury of being able to pick and choose islands and bases throughout the Mediterranean and further afield. The Ionian Islands had been Venetian territory but this was now under Napoleon's orbit. The British seized the islands to use as a base to patrol the Aegean and Adriatic and keep an eye on Napoleon's armies on the continent.
