Jean Nicolet in Wisconsin

Jean Nicolet represented French attempts to discover the extent of the waterways of the New World in a desperate attempt to find a route to Asia. Jean Nicolet actually believed that he was in the process of reaching Asia as he crossed Lake Michigan. It did not take him too long to realise that he was not in the Orient after all. A by-product of his explorations was confirmation of the importance and extent of the fur trade.
