Nelson Mandela


The freeing of Nelson Mandela and accession of majority rule in South Africa helped to bring an end to one of the more unsavoury imperial legacies. Britain had allowed the white population create a discriminatory system in the aftermath of the Boer War in an attempt to placate the Boers. In the end, the Boers were able to hijack the system and use it to introduce racist and apartheid policies.
