British Troops in Northern Ireland

1969 saw British Troops posted to the streets of Northern Ireland. They were sent to protect the Catholic community from the Protestants of the province. The posting was only supposed to be for a few weeks but ended up lasting for decades. Soon enough, the troops became identified with the forces of law and order and so the Catholic community soon regarded them as a legitimate target. It was not a pleasant posting for British soldiers who found themselves in the middle of feuding communities and a target for all.
