R101 over St. Paul's Cathedral


During the interwar years, Britain also tried to make airships into a viable technology. Just over a decade earlier German Zeppelins had been dropping bombs on London. The British airship program came crashing to a halt shortly after this photograph was taken when R101 plunged into a hillside near Beauvais in France whilst en route to India. 46 people were killed in the accident.
