The 'Sir Walter Scott' Arriving in New York


This ship was named in honour of the recently deceased author. This picture also illustrates the importance of communications links between Britain and its ex-colony America. Despite having a growing empire of its own, much of British investment, trade and migration still headed towards the culturally and commercially familiar United States.
