An Artist's Suggestion for a New Symbolical Style of Architecture for the Empire


This painting by Sydney Herbert suggests a possible architectural melding of influences to create a distinctive style for the Empire. It is a mixture of Oriental and Classical styles which did indeed make inroads in certain buildings in Asia and occasionally back in Britain. However, conservative values tended to emphasise the Classical style and Oriental motifs and structures became the exception rather than the norm.
