i'm in the process of coding battle-related information for the Indo-Pakistan Wars of 1965 and 1971. i am trying to get approximates sizes (i.e., *number of combat troops*) in various units so that i might ball-park relative forces committed to battle. i'd like to identify figures for battalions, regiments/brigades/divisions, and so forth. i'm writing to this board, because i thought Indian and Pakistani units might resemble British units, and that your collective expertise would help me with these wars. i could be very wrong on this point. i am grateful to you for any information.

many thanks for your time,

My Colonial Project...maybe http://www.britishempire.co.uk/vanilla/index.php?p=/discussion/45/my-colonial-project...maybe Thu, 22 Dec 2011 09:24:20 -0500 Buckeye 45@/vanilla/index.php?p=/discussions
So, what to do? Well, I have some nice terrain for the middle east/northern Africa already from my Force on Force modern project, so whatever I decide to come up with needs to be located on a smiliar setting. I also really like the early Egyptian uniform (circa 1882-1885), the British in red coats (which from what I gather was last worn during the First Boer War), the Italians at Adowa (1896), and the Sudanese at Khartoum. Needless to say some of these faves do not "fit" together. I also really like having the major powers are playing in the same "game", like the Boxer Rebellion. One can pit faction vs. faction that way, giving each faction their own unique set of objectives, while acting in concert against the native forces.

Now, there are many others out there who have created their own "ImagiNations" (not sure if that term applies to the colonial 1800s, but you get the idea). Creating my own nation would allow me to field whatever forces I desire, giving me the opportunity to use some colorful factions on the tabletop. However, I prefer to live in a more realistic world (ha, that was funny) and would like to use forces as they were at one specific point in history.

So, what to do is the question yet again. I have Soldier's Companion (the Heliograph production that was formerly published by GDW) on order. It is set in 1889 and has unit orgs and uniform descriptions for that general period. Infantry unit orgs are all based on twenty figure units, ala The Sword and the Flame, but I can deal with that. What I might do is to take that setting and push it back a few years so that I can use the Brits in their red and the Egyptians in their white uniforms, and still add in some other factions as needed.

So, final decision is yet to be made, but comments (opinions) are appreciated. Folks here might offer other ideas I haven't though of, which will either assist me in my final process, or add more silt to my already muddied (and muddled) brain!]]>

The Maitland plan was put into effect during the Napoleonic War in 1806. England used the fact that Spain was now technically an ally of France as the execuse to start the war. England sent an expeditionary force of 1,600 men to invade Buenos Aires, under General William Carr Beresford; this attempt failed. A year later, an invasion army of 11,000 men arrived in Buenos Aires under the orders of General John Whitelocke. At the same time, a second fleet with 4.000 men captured Montivedeo and USED THE CITY AS A STAGING POST AND COMMUNICATIONS CENTRE. The fighting in Buenos Aires was to be one of the most heroic pages in all of Latin American history. The people of Buenos Aires single-handedly defeated this huge invasion force in hand-to-hand and street-by-street fighting.

British troops administered Argentine territory for one year

Even San Martin, the father of Argentina was loyal to the British crown

Jim Herlihy has got the ball rolling with this letter:

Your Honour,

Addressing myself to your honour in the name of Jesus Christ who Your Honour so closely resembles, I apply for the post of Chief Clerk in your honourable establishment which I understand is vacant. My qualifications are supreme. I am thoroughly acquainted with all branches of tea production having for many years worked for the Honourable Mr. John Smithers, the Holy Father of Tea. Furthermore I am most skilful at manipulations of accounts and can arrange that in few years your Honour could retire to Honourable United Kingdom with comfortable pittance.

Prostrating myself at Your Honour’s Great Feet, I remain

Your humble Servant,

In geography I'm doing a research project on Cultural Diversity. One section is looking at the effects of cultural imperalism and whilst I am looking a variety of ways this happens, such as with Human Rights, Globilisation ect., I am very much interested in the role colonialism, especially British colonialism, played in the....'transformation' of culture (or stamping out to the radicals). Annoyingly, books and the internet seem to offer very little information on what effects the British had on culture and what they did to try and implement more western ways of living. To say they didn't try is a bit of a lie. I remember reading a year or two ago about one culture that was just killed off by the British, it wasn't intentionally but it happened. So do you guys have any I dea where I could maybe start my research?

Thanks

We can see this in the convicts of Australia, the officer class of Kenya, the immigrants to Rhodesia who were of a lower social status, and the development of colonial gentry.

Britons who settled in India, for example, were said to be of a higher social class.

Does anyone perchance have links or sources about settler society in Asia and Africa?

Also, just as a point of interest, are there many people of British ancestry still living in India descended from colonial times or did they all evaporate on independence, like my relatives?

Many thanks,

Empress.]]>

I've posted about this on The Miniatures Page (http://theminiaturespage.com/) and it seems that folks feel that the figures could be used for Aden or East Africa, but there is no British campaign in East Africa during the 1820s-40s. So I am looking for any info (battles, units involved, unit strengths, etc.) for the Aden Campaign.
