Rt Rev Dr Edward Sargent


Rt Rev Dr Edward Sargent DD (1815-89), the son of a soldier at Waterloo. Born Paris 1815. Moved with his father to India where he was adopted and educated by a Madras chaplain, Rev W Sawyer. Trained in a seminary of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) near Madras. Went as an agent to Tirunelveli 1835-39. To England where he took the Islington course and was ordained Deacon 1841. Priest (Madras) 1842. Returned as CMS missionary in Tirunelveli: Suviseshapuram 1843-52, Palamcottah 1852-77 (Leave 1854-55, 1872-74). Consecrated (CMS) bishop, coadjutor of the Bishop of Madras, at Calcutta 1877. Remained Palamcottah, worked closely with his friend Caldwell of the SPG. Returned to England for the Lambeth Conference of 1888 but too ill to attend, and he died at Palamcottah the following year.
