Viscount Edward Grey

Viscount Grey was British Foreign Minister from 1905 until 1916. He supported the idea of the Triple Entente and backed France during the Second Morocco Crisis of 1911. He had tried hard to avoid war in 1914. He had proposed holding a conference to discuss the problems following the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. This idea was ignored. However, once it had started he argued that a German victory must be avoided at all costs. He thought that the independence of Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden were all in danger. He resigned at the same time that Herbert Asquith did.
