Helmet, 1813 - 1820

The heavy dragoon 'Waterloo' helmet that was introduced in 1812 but was not worn by the 4thDG until they returned from the Peninsula in 1813. They did not attend the battle of Waterloo. The helmet was certainly preferable to the cocked hat worn previously as it was more weatherproof, gave better protection and stayed on the head. The battle honour PENINSULA is on a scroll above the royal cypher. There is a helmet surviving from this period that is said to have belonged to Col Sherlock the CO, bearing this honour on a gilt badge on the right side of the scull.
