Private 1878

This is a good view of the 1871 equipment which brought the ammunition pouches to the front of the waistbelt. The rifle is the Martini Henry introduced in 1874. His bayonet is 22 inches long and is the socket type. The man wears black gaiters. He has a white haversack slung from the right shoulder but it is folded into a neat rectangle.
