1st Punjab Cavalry

Officers and NCOs 1890

The British officers of the 1st Cavalry are wearing dress patrol jackets which are dark blue with five rows of quadruple black cord across the front. The black braid decoration on the cuffs was an Austrian knot at first but changed later to a Bengal knot. Their breeches are buff coloured and they have high black boots. The pouchbelt is plain black leather, and their white helmets have a coloured pagri. There are two officers wearing non regimental uniform and two others in pill-box caps and dress trousers with gold stripes.

The Indian officers are distinguished by their blue kurtas with gold lace round the collar and down the front. They have a gold lace edge to their red cuffs. There are three rows of black cord hung across their chests with a black leather pouchbelt worn under the cords. A regimental distinction was the wearing of the white pag at an angle. These can be seen on the foreheads of the Sikh officers. Their black waistbelts have rectangular gilt or brass buckles, a sword on one side and a pistol holster on the other.

There are 4 NCOs satnding in the photo. They have plain blue kurtas apart from the red low collar with red piping down the fly front, and red pointed cuffs. They also have black belts with a pistol holster and lanyard which goes around the neck.
