Officer c1875

The plumed dragoon helmet was popular with the British officers of irregular cavalry regiments even though they were light cavalry. The 5th Punjab Cavalry was distinctive in that it carried on with this fashion up to the end of the 19th century when other regiments discontinued it in the 1870s. The first type, seen on this officer, was made of felt but by the mid 1880s they wore a rifle-green metal helmet with gilt fittings and a red and green plume.

The pouch-belt is not very clear but there is no sign of the flask cord (or pistol cord) that characterised the later uniform. The tunic is green with black cords at this stage. Later they were gold cords and plaited. The light coloured collar is scarlet with gold lace edge.
