Officer c1878

The tunic is dark green and has 6 rows of plaited gold cords ending in trefoils except for the topmost cords which end in a more elaborate device which covers the top of the sleeve. He is of junior rank so the scarlet cuffs are decorated with a gold Austrian knot in light dragoon fashion. The collar is scarlet, edged in gold lace and there is an edging of gold Russia braid down the front edge of the tunic and along the skirt. His pouchbelt is plain, without a flask cord at this stage. This may be an undress item since the helmet is not fitted with it's plume, an indication of semi-full dress.

The helmet is shown on the chair. It is of dark green coloured metal with gilt fittings and a spike on top which is the alternative to the red and green plume worn in full dress. The sabretache is clearly on display but at this stage does not have battle honours. It is red with a gold lace edge and a cypher. This was before the Afghan War of 1878 so most of their battle honours would come later. The mameluke style sword is very decorative but not as curved as those worn in later years. The hessian boots are gold edged and have a gold boss. This type of boot was normally reserved for levee dress.
