Corporal 1904

This striking Harry Payne postcard shows the colour of the other ranks' uniform which in contemporary photos looks drab. The corporal faces his horse to give us a view of the 14th's distinctive yellow busby bag. He has collar badges which were officially authorised for the dress uniform in 1900. But strangely, the artist has omitted the regimental arm badge above his stripes. The gold lace chevrons have a red cloth backing. The saddle was redesigned for the British cavalry in 1892 and modified over the next 20 years so that this is the mark III version. The frame of the saddle was metal to replace the wooden pre-1892 type. But the bridle still seems to be the pre-1902 type.
