5th Dragoon Guards

Sabretache Badge c1874

During or after the Crimean War the wearing of sabretaches in the cavalry was restricted to Hussars only so the 5th Dragoon Guards did not wear them again until they were reintroduced in 1874. This badge was introduced at some time in the 1850s, with the 4 Peninsula war honours and reappeared in 1872 with the two Crimea honours BALACLAVA and SEVASTOPOL. The honours can be seen radiating out on 6 of the points on the gilt star.
