5th Dragoon Guards

Cap and Collar Badge

The bimetal badge was worn on the collar and cap by officers and other ranks. This design first appeared in the 1850s as the centre of a large star badge worn by all ranks on undress sabretaches and undress pouches. The use of the badge without the star probably started in the 1890s. The 1900 Dress Regulations mentions that officers should wear it on undress frock collars and field service caps. Pictures and photos show the other ranks sometimes wearing it on full dress and undress collars while there are no pictures of officers wearing it on undress collars until WW1, although it was worn on officer's forage caps. Around 1914 the cap badge for officers was changed to the pattern adopted by the 5th Inniskilling DG after WW1.
