5th Dragoon Guards

Sabretache 1837-1855

The used of Queen Victoria's VR cypher is the only main difference between this and the 1826 example. From 1830 to 1837 the WR cypher of King William IV was used. This final design, before the full-dress sabretache was discontinued shortly before the Crimean War, is much tighter and more pleasing. The green backing cloth is so dark that it appears black. The abolition of the dress sabretache in the mid 1850s meant that the undress sabretache was adopted for dress wear but this did not happen until c1872, so between 1853 and 1872 no sabretache was worn by officers in review order. After 1872 the black leather tache with central badge was worn.
