Patrick Doolan



Doolan was one of the men who rode in the Charge of the Light Brigade on October 25th 1854. His face was smashed by shot from the Russian Artillery, and his jaw fractured on both sides. He was picked up by an officer. He continued to serve in the 8th Hussars at the siege of Sevastopol but was later discharged as unfit for duty. He retired to Ireland and lived off a relief fund. Doolan was 29 at the time of the Crimean War and died in 1904, aged 79. He was given a Crimea Medal with three clasps for Alma, Balaklava and Sevastopol. He also received the Turkish Crimea Medal. These were auctioned by Sotheby's in Billingshurst on 11th April 1996.
